Hightlight of Bologna Book Fair 2012: Step Aside, I Am Not Your Grandma!

Aan de kant ik ben je oma niet!Step Aside, I Am Not Your Grandma! is a book of narrative poems about older people, who – and children tend to forget this – were once young as well and have a lifetime of experience behind them. Bette Westera portrays these people twice in a poem, in two different phases of life: first in the present and then as a child, young person or young adult. Glimpses into their lives when they were younger give the reader a deeper understanding of their lives now that their elderly.

The stories are told in the form of ‘fictitious narratives’: poems in a meter and rhyme scheme serving the feeling of each particular tale.

The book’s purpose is twofold. It tells funny, poignant and thought-provoking stories of special individuals at different stages of their lives. And it gives the reader a look at the length and breadth of life: everything you do and experience in a lifetime becomes part of you – determines who you are. Everything you do and have done matters.

The stories stand alone and can be read separately. The (implicit) connecting idea is the care centre, where everyone is looked after lovingly. From the onset of this project, illustrator Sylvia Weve was excited about depicting these seniors. Her unique style strengthens and deepens the portrayal of these older individuals.

This book is exceptional in its kind: it is the first Dutch book for children (age 9+) to focus on older people but then not in the typical grandparent role. Earlier collaborations by the Weve / Westera duo have been very successful. The Dutch Zilveren Griffel (Silver Slate Pencil) was awarded to Bette Westera in 2011 for Ik leer je liedjes van verlangen (Floating on a Cloud…The Marvellous Teachings & Tall Tales of Mr Mandrillus), while it was also among the few children’s book chosen for the Best Dutch Book Designs of 2010.
